Minute repeater saga 1: Origins and evolution

Tags: Bells, Clock, Gongs, Michel Parmigiani, Minute Repeater, Night time, Parmigiani Fleurier, Ringing systems, Thomas Mudge, Thomas Mudge

Why was it necessary to suddenly have clocks ringing the time on demand? And how could watchmakers reduce the size of a clock's striking movement to fit into a wristwatch? Michel Parmigiani, president of Parmigiani Fleurier and master watchmaker, answers these questions and many others about the origins of the minute repeater.

That antique quarter repeater is beautiful. I believe it may be late 18 or early 19th century?

Thank you for the explanation and history behind the term 'minute repeater'.It was very interesting indeed. This video is very useful for people like myself who have just very recently discovered a passion for haute horology... and want to learn everything possible about it.it's amazing how quickly one can become obsessed.I continue to be in awe of the wondrous ingenuity of these genius micro engineers and their beautiful, intricate creations.

That's a beautiful striking movement. If someone was to ask you to point to a proof of human genius - point that finger firmly at horology!

It seems a lot of horological engineering in watch making was invented in England. I wonder why they did not become a big watch making nation? Was it just tax and that England still tried to keep things hand made and got put out of business by a more automated and mass produced watch made in Switzerland, they just could not compete? That would be ironic as when quartz nearly killed Swiss watch making. It was going back to antiquated and more expensive hand crafting in watches that saved Swiss watches from cheap quartz and digital watches.
